WHISKY WEDNESDAY Feat. Arran 10yr. First released in 2006, this 10-year whisky is the flagship single malt from Arran located on the namesake island off the southwest coast of the mainland. This youthful single malt is a blend predominantly aged in ex-bourbon barrels with a small amount of ex-sherry casks used. It sees no coloring or chill-filtration before being bottled at a respectable 92 proof. TASTING NOTES "As you bring the glass to your nose, herbal and fruity aromas will greet you with notes of dry grasses, apple, honeydew, tart white raspberries, green raisins and delicate vanilla. On the palate this whisky has a pleasant rich creamy texture and flavors of tart green apple, big biscuity malts, and dried citrus peels. For its final year of maturation it is finished in hand selected Gonzalez Byass Oloroso Sherry butts. This 15 year offers a sumptuous sherried nose with delicious notes of fig, orange marmalade, playful hints of leather and a touch of smoke. The palate is a medium to full-bodied taste of marvellously rich sherry fruit cake, milk chocolate and creamy toffee, light oak flourished with the slightest hint of white pepper for a cheeky tang. The finish is softly spicy, tingling with nuttiness, a hint of salted butter that lingers long and seductively and then gently fades. Although most of their production is a major component in Johnnie Walker blends, the distillery has recently been releasing their own single-malts. This expression is bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, after 15 years maturing in refill sherry casks. This expression has more subtle sweetness with hints of candied fruits. #whiskywednesday feat: #Bruichladdich #Octomore 7.1. It is the latest expression in the world's most heavily peated whisky series. Using only barley sourced from the Scottish mainland, 7.1 is peated to 208ppm, but Octomore is about much more than the raw power of massive phenols. It is an intellectual challenge, a sensory exploration of #barley 🌾provenance, cask management and artisanal distillation techniques. Challenging conventional wisdom, 7.1 is released at five years old to maximise the awesome power and vigour of the phenols. Matured in American oak and bottled at 59.5%abv without chill filtration the spirit retains its unctuous mouthfeel and presents its natural colour as "summer sun ☀️ on Hebridean sand". Jim describes the nose as: “Like sea spray and caramel, lemon balm and pipe tobacco. Slowly, the peat rises from the glass, gentle but strong, lifting vanilla, mint, toffee, golden syrup and almond.” On the palate, he finds: “Smoothness, sweetness 🍬and then smoke💨. A texture like no other, satin soft and devilishly warming.
