Seven Months In Sanctuary

Since last August, Velasquez and her family have been in sanctuary at Park Hill United Methodist Church and Temple Micah, whose congregations share the building at Montview and Glencoe. From her makeshift apartment inside the building, Velasquez recently described leaving El Salvador.

‘There Is No Deal’

The city parks and recreation department has scheduled three additional meetings seeking public input for the park. Dates will be Tuesday, March 13, Tuesday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 17. All begin at 5:30 p.m. and all will be at Stedman Elementary School, at 2930 Dexter St.

Talk of the Neighborhood

The basic design is modeled after similar pocket parks. Taylor and others noted that the size of the park is about one-third of an acre. That’s about 40 percent larger than Turtle Park, which is the pocket park at 23rd and Dexter Street.

The Park Hill Golf Course land is at Colorado Boulevard and 35th Avenue, stretching northeast to Interstate 70. (It should not be confused with the City Park Golf Course, which is approximately a mile to the south and currently closed for construction of a stormwater drainage project.)

    I met Shabazz recently at Spinelli's Bakery. Shabazz moved to Denver four months ago from Florida to live with his girlfriend. He likes Park Hill and says it reminds him of Brooklyn, where he grew up. "I like the layout of the neighborhood, the feel."
