Commander Michael Calo of Denver Police Depar...

Commander Michael Calo of Denver Police Department District 2 has announced that he will be leaving his post on June 16, 2018. Under his leadership the safety and concerns of the residents of Precinct 223, and the entire District have always been his top priority. It is with a heartfelt thank you that we say goodbye. We recognize the work that he and his team have done, and continue to do in Precinct 223, and are truly appreciative. Commander Ron Thomas from District 5 (Stapleton & Montbello) will become the Commander of District 2. Below is a letter from Mike: To the District 2 Community: “Thank you for the opportunity to proudly serve you for over the past six years. As Commander of District 2, serving nearly 175,000 citizens in an 18 square mile area, I have turned an organization of nearly 150 employees in to the premier district in the Denver Police Department. As Commander, I brought focus to internal issues in the district that were damaging officer morale, resulting in a renewed interest in innovative policing and improving the quality of life for the citizens we serve. The partnerships we have forged with the community and other local law enforcement agencies, as well as creative crime strategies we have put in place, have made our district the model for our police department. We have received recognition from our police chief, as well as from our community leaders for the positive difference we have made in reducing violent crime, establishing innovative programs, building employees’ enthusiasm and professionalism, and consistently “getting the job done.” As of today, District 2 has the only double digit decrease in violent crime (-15.6 %), leading the entire city in that category. In fact, we are the only police district with a double digit decrease in violent crime. We are also proudly posting an (-8.1 %) decrease in property crime. These numbers are reflected in the Part 1 Crime in the City and County of Denver based on Uniformed Crime Reporting (UCR) Standards. (6/11/18) The credit for such a continued decrease in both violent crime and property crime is indicative of the professional team of police officers that serve you from District 2. I am proud to say that they all believed in my vision to prevent crime in our community. Your continued support of our efforts certainly amplified our positive collaborations as well. I thank you all for believing in me and working with me to reduce overall crime within our beloved District 2. I will be leaving my post on Saturday, June 16, 2018. Commander Ron Thomas will be assuming command of District 2. I will continue to support Commander Thomas during his transition. The fine group of professional police officers and civilians will remain in place and continue to proudly serve you.” Sincerely, Michael W. Calo, 85012 Commander Michael Calo District 2 Commander Denver Police Department Mary Beth Susman - Denver City Councilwoman, District 5 Christopher J. Herndon Michael B. Hancock

Neighborhood apps, like most social media, do...

Neighborhood apps, like most social media, don’t seem to actually bring us together. The anonymity, performance for likes, and temptation to hot take is bad enough with distant aunts and high school friends. We don’t need that in our communities. Our hoods need more face to face interaction. Maybe improving our neighborhoods isn’t about winning arguments, but about spreading kindness. Instead of logging onto Nextdoor, let’s start going next door.

The joy and shame of getting into an argument on Nextdoor
I got into my first argument on Nextdoor last Sunday. I feel amazing, and ashamed. Nextdoor, the popular neighborhood-based social network, was probably built to help neighbors connect. It's more often used for petty arguments, coyote paranoia, and bizarre hot takes. I always enjoyed watching the flame wars from afar, but then I got pulled [...]

It was his father, Morry, who got Glen Weseloh into the neon business. "My dad had been bending since the end of WWII," Weseloh said.
