Historic Overlays

Historic designation is one method of ensuring that changes to a neighborhood occur thoughtfully, preserving the fabric of a neighborhood that people love — homes with history, vital dwellings that preserve the past — while acknowledging modern lifestyles. Navigating the ins and outs of the designation process and what it means for your property, however, can be a difficult task. We’ve created a Historic Designation FAQ guide, which answers many of the questions we commonly receive from property owners.

    Congress Park Neighbors, Inc
When Denver updated the city zoning code in 2010 it included a new tool, the Conservation District. Conservation District are different than historic districts because they do not regulate demolition of historic structures and do not require design review of modifications. However, conservation districts can create special zoning that supports the character of a neighborhood.

Lez Zeppelin Slays Sexism

Lez Zeppelin plays with Lotus Gait at 9 p.m. on Friday, January 5, at the Bluebird Theater, 3317 East Colfax Avenue, 303-377-1666; then with the Jackson Cloud Band at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, at the Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive, Nederland, 303-258-3637.

    Lez Zeppelin Slays Sexism
Lez Zeppelin was hardly the first all-women outfit paying tribute to all-men rock bands. But when the group formed back in 2004, the trend was in its infancy. AC/DShe and Cheap Chick were around, but the Iron Maidens, Misstallica, the Ramonas and many others had yet to form.

iZCALLi Is Building Bridges With Rock

iZCALLi, with Rubedo, Saturday, January 6, Bluebird Theater, 3317 East Colfax Avenue, $13, 303-377-1666.

iZCALLi Is Building Bridges With Rock
Some bands are defined not by the type of music they play, but by the language they sing. This is the case with iZCALLi. Singer/guitarist Miguel Avina and his family moved to Colorado from Mexico City in 1992, when he was ten; here he learned English and was influenced by United States rock bands like Green Day, the White Stripes and the Strokes.

9 News:Denver’s Congress Park: City living with a ‘small town’ feel

The beginnings of Congress Park stem from the 1880s when the area was known as Capitol Heights. Its development coincided with the tramway lines along East Colfax, East 12th Avenue and East Sixth Avenue. Prior to the Pikes Peak gold rush in the 1850s, the area was Native American land. By 1860, the blossoming city of Denver had become home to 5,000 people. One of Denver’s founders, William Larimer, sited the area of Mount Prospect Cemetery, which would evolve over the next 100 years into the present-day Cheesman Park, the Morgan Addition, Denver Botanic Gardens, the Denver Waterboard Reservoirs, and the neighborhood namesake Congress Park.
