Joseph Meek, who passed away today in 1875, was a famous Mountain Man in the mid-1800, traveling in the western US as a fur trader and telling tales of exaggerated adventures. Some scholars believe that one of his adventure of getting capture by a Native American tribe and later escaping is depicted in "The Last Shot" by William Tylee Ranney, detailing the moment before Meek was captured.
