Denver was founded over a barrel of whiskey, and ever since that momentous day in 1858, this city has celebrated its liquid assets - some made here, some simply poured here. The Mile High City is renowned across the country for its beer brewed with Rocky Mountain spring water as well as the outpourings of hundreds of craft breweries.

Maybe it's just that it's January, and everyone's thinking about the outdoors - which is only sometimes a place we want to be without freezing off our...best intentions. But nonetheless, a lot of the literary events this week have to do with being outside: protesting the current political and social climate, or exploring various aspects of the natural world.

MLK Marade goes on despite slick conditions

The Marade (a combo of march and parade) starts at E. Colfax Ave. at Columbine, south of City Park. Participants will march straight west along Colfax, ending three miles later at Civic Center Park’s Greek Theater.

MLK Marade will go on despite slick conditions
Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy is commemorated in Denver with what has grown to be one of the largest MLK Day celebrations in the U.S. - even larger than that of Washington, D.C. Among the local events set to honor Dr. King is the annual Marade on Monday morning (held rain, snow or shine).

MLK Marade Continues Through Denver Streets Despite Ice, Snow

The Marade began at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the corner of Colfax Ave. and Columbine Street. The Marade continued west toward the State Capitol and ended with a rally at Civic Center Park.

MLK Marade Continues Through Denver Streets Despite Ice, Snow
DENVER (CBS4) - Thousands filled the streets of Denver on Monday for the annual MLK Marade to honor the civil rights leader. One of the organizers told CBS4's Tori Mason that Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested, sprayed with water hoses and bitten by dogs to get his message out there, so dealing with icy streets and freezing temperatures seems small in comparison.

Historic Overlays

Historic designation is one method of ensuring that changes to a neighborhood occur thoughtfully, preserving the fabric of a neighborhood that people love — homes with history, vital dwellings that preserve the past — while acknowledging modern lifestyles. Navigating the ins and outs of the designation process and what it means for your property, however, can be a difficult task. We’ve created a Historic Designation FAQ guide, which answers many of the questions we commonly receive from property owners.

    Congress Park Neighbors, Inc
When Denver updated the city zoning code in 2010 it included a new tool, the Conservation District. Conservation District are different than historic districts because they do not regulate demolition of historic structures and do not require design review of modifications. However, conservation districts can create special zoning that supports the character of a neighborhood.
