On a warm day, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 120°F in a matter of minutes – even with the windows cracked. If you see a dog in a hot car immediately call 311 and familiarize yourself with the Good Samaritan law that provides legal immunity for people who break a car window to save an animal. More info from Denver Animal Protection.

Public hearing June 19 to review designation application for South Denver’s Wellshire Park Cottage

The Landmark Preservation Commission will hold a public hearing June 19 on the historic designation application submitted for the Wellshire Park Cottage, a French Eclectic style house built in 1926.  The house is located at 2900 S. University Blvd., in the Wellshire neighborhood, just south of the intersection of Yale Avenue and University Boulevard in South Denver, but was built in what was then unincorporated Arapahoe County. It was the first and only home from the Wellshire Park Subdivision, planned by developers George Olinger and Lloyd Fulenwider, but was not fully developed or annexed into the City and County of Denver until after World War II.

Neighbors Spruce Up the Park

The tiny parkway between Dexter Street and Belo Horizonte (just off of Cranmer Park) got a little love and attention from members of the Cranmer Park/Hilltop Civic Association on Saturday morning, June 2.  Ken and Kay Malo came up with the suggestion for this service project and supplied the coffee and donuts.  We all came armed with a lawn tool and got to work right away clearing out dead branches and removing weeds.  Nearby neighbors lent us compost and trash bins and even joined us after seeing our efforts — great to meet new people and get a helping hand.   And our new best friend, Gil Salas, from Public Works, came by several times to pick up the debris and save us quite a bit of work hauling it away.

Denver Days 2018 takes place August 4-12

What is Denver Days??  Mayor Michael B. Hancock envisioned a city where neighbors not only knew their neighbors but as a result felt safer and more connected to the communities they call home. Five years ago the Mayor turned that vision into reality by creating Denver Days, a program during the first week of August that encourages neighbors to get to know their neighbors by hosting block parties, picnics, and service projects with the focus on small, organic gatherings.  Park Permits are free-of-charge to those holding a picnic or public event, both of which must be free and open to the public. Applications must be submitted 30 days prior to the event.  Denver Days events must abide by Denver Parks Rules and Regulations.

Sundial Reconstruction Update

In the next few days, it is anticipated that workers will begin to tap the water line that runs along the vacated Cherry Street, at the easternmost edge of the park, just in front of the homes facing the park. Running a water line from this point to the Sundial Terrace will allow a working water fountain to be a part of the reconstructed Sundial Terrace. This new water line will meet safe drinking water standards. Workers have begun laying stone – particularly on the western steps and the west facing wall – stop by and peek through the construction fence to see the progress. With the mild winter weather, the construction has moved along a bit ahead of schedule. Completion is expected in early fall. Soon, work will also commence on the separate sidewalk project – this will allow safer connectivity to the rest of the neighborhood, with new sidewalk running along First Avenue from the existing sidewalk at Cherry Street west to Bellaire Street. A sidewalk will also be placed from First Avenue to the Sundial Terrace, along Belo Horizonte. There will not be a sidewalk from the Terrace to Third Avenue.
