SUNI hosts a variety of events to draw in members of different demographic groups, enjoys a strong relationship with our City Councilmember, and seeks to partner with other RNOs on various initiatives. Yet we are always looking for ways we can be stronger. Neighbor participation is always at the top of our list - connected neighbors = a strong neighborhood.

Genesee, the town along I-70 as you drive up to the mountains, has a history hike, complete with audio snippets about interesting points along the way. It got me thinking about the stories neighbors could tell about Sunnyside... 🤔 Are there any interviewers out there that would be interested in heading up a project collecting neighborhood stories? https://www.geneseefoundation.org/history-hike/

FULL TEST OF OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS WEDNESDAY 5-9-2018 Denver will conduct a full three minutes test of the outdoor warning siren system this Wednesday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m. This test is conducted annually in advance of tornado season. As a reminder, if you hear outdoor warning sirens at any other time, seek shelter immediately. The best places to shelter during a tornado are indoors, in a basement or interior room, and away from windows. If you are indoors and cannot hear the sirens, that is OK! Sirens are an outdoor warning system designed to alert those who are outside that they need to seek shelter.
Hello Sunnyside United Neighbors! I’d like to invite residents of the Sunnyside Neighborhood to the Vision Zero Community Forum. This family-friendly, community event is focused on safer streets, especially on high priority streets like Federal and Colfax. We’d really like to use this forum to show how other cities have assisted with community engagement and empowerment to make safer mobility environments, so that Denver can move more in partnership with communities. This event will also have a Federal Blvd Photovoice Exhibition by 17 residents from along the Federal Blvd corridor. We will have interpretation in Spanish and Vietnamese at the forum (and, I will make my best effort to get interpretation in any other language requested as well). Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions! visionzerodenver.eventbrite.com Michele

Rafael Espinoza, Denver District 1 Councilman stopped by our annual meeting to talk about the critical nature of the planning process for our neighborhood. “Change is going to happen... but it really should be guided by the community and your input.” There are a lot of ways neighbors can make their voice heard about development in Sunnyside. Please consider coming to our next planning and community development (PCD) meeting Thursday, May 10th (7pm).

Maintenance Work Planned for 15th Street Bridge Over the South Platte River DENVER – Denver Public Works is working hard this summer to keep its bridge infrastructure maintained, with work scheduled to begin this weekend on the 15th Street Bridge over the South Platte River. A full closure of 15th Street will be required on Saturday, April 28, for the work and traffic will be detoured to Little Raven Street, 19th Street, and Platte Street. On Sunday, and continuing for about a month, crews will maintain a lane of traffic in each direction while the bridge work is underway. Ensuring the city’s infrastructure remains in a state of good repair is one of many tactics identified in Mayor Hancock’s Mobility Action Plan. The cost of this bridge rehabilitation project is approximately $300k. https://www.denvergov.org/content/dam/denvergov/Portals/728/documents/Denver's%20Mobility%20Action%20Plan_7.7.pdf

National Preservation Month is an annual opportunity for everyone to celebrate what they love about preservation across the country and here in Denver. Historic places and buildings don't just capture the architecture of previous eras; they also root our communities in our shared history and help create a sense of place for newcomers and longtime residents alike. Everywhere in Denver there are spots with stories to tell. Denver's Landmark Preservation team wants help capturing these places and telling their stories. Throughout the final weeks of April and all of May, Denver residents are invited to share what places matter to them by taking pictures of their favorite historic places and buildings in Denver and share them online, using the materials linked below and the hashtag #ThisPlaceMattersDenver. The pictures can be of official local landmarks or of non-designated places that mean something to individuals or the community. Selected photos will be included in a display on preservation in Denver that will be up in the Webb Municipal Building during National Preservation Month.
Join us April 26th for our 29th Sunnyside Annual Meeting and Pizza Party! We will be giving away prizes to the neighbor who has lived in Sunnyside the longest (consecutively)!

A tall tree is broken near the base of the trunk at the intersection of Hooker and W. 41st in Denver on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. In Rob Davis' eight years as Denver's tree czar, he had never seen such arboreal anarchy as the mess of fallen trees left by Tuesday's wild winds.
