Edgar Degas' "Three Women at the Races (Trois femmes aux courses)" is this week's Artwork of the Week! This pastel from 1885 is seemingly unfinished - not unusual for a Degas pastel - offering us an opportunity to trace the artist's working method. He layered the coloring with varying intensities and hues to create the notion of volume and form, and the many penti-menti (shadows of initial markings) give the composition an unusual concentrated energy. This magnificent work is part of the DAM's permanent collection. Come see this pastel for yourself in "Degas: A Passion for Perfection": http://bit.ly/2CifU4a Edgar Degas, Three Women at the Races (Trois femmes aux courses), about 1885. Pastel on paper; 27 x 27 in. Denver Art Museum: anonymous gift, 1973.234

When we are remembered at the end of our lives, what do we want people to say? I think about this quite a bit and have interested to hear what others think. Early in my life I wanted to make a ton of money and was focused on being a success in the business world. As I've gotten older, I have realized that family and leaving an appropriate legacy are what matter most to me. I think it is so important to raise up great children that become productive members of society. The best way to raise children is by example. The way that we live as parents is likely what they will become. I am convinced that philanthropy and helping others is the key to living a successful life.
I am Ryan Van Wagenen and originally from Salt Lake City, Utah and now spend a great deal of time in Denver, Colorado. I have lived my whole life in Utah and Colorado and love the people in these regions.

Ten-year-old Adelyn Wall loves art and spends much of her time drawing and painting. When she was born, Adelyn was a patient in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children's Hospital Colorado. She wanted to find a way to raise money to help other patients in the NICU, and art was the answer. She founded Art by Adelyn to sell her line of notecards based on her original artworks and has donated $10,000 to date from the sales. Find a selection of Adelyn's cards in The Shop in the Hamilton Building.

#Whiskywednesday feat. #brichladdich #classisladdie Laddie Scottish Barley Bottling Note Created by Jim McEwan from whisky matured in American oak casks alongside Lochindaal, and chosen to represent the classic, unpeated distillery style. Bruichladdich's new signature bottling is made with 100% Scottish barley. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt Nose: Elegantly sweet with honey'd barley, boiled sweets and orange petals. Wafts of sea air. Palate: Red apples and white grapes, with touches of sweet cinnamon and brown sugar. Still softly coastal. Finish: Mineral-rich malt, with toffee and more honey. @visitdenver @ goldentrianglecreativegroup @dnvrbrewscruise @denverartmuseum #Whiskywednesday #islay #singlemaltwhisky #denverbrewery #colorado #britishgastrobrewpub #caskales

Fatal crashes may have one cause or multiple contributing factors. The number of drivers in Colorado involved in deadly accidents while using alcohol or drugs has steadily increased in recent years. Even so, careless/inattentive driving is the leading contributing factor among drivers in fatal crashes.
Recognizing the growing problem of distracted driving, federal transportation researchers in 2012 started categorizing Careless/Inattentive Driving as a separate contributing factor. For more information and patterns over the last seven years check out the interactive map here: knowledgeinitiative.org/interactive-crash-map
