185 “Puffers” Stolen in Denver in Three Months’ Puff…Puff…GONE! – 185 “Puffers” Stolen in Denver in Three Months’ Time Denver Police Encourage Car Theft Prevention Denver, CO – Friday, February 9, 2018 – We get it, no one likes climbing into a bone-chilling cold car, but warming up a vehicle while leaving it running unattended – “puffing” – is a golden invitation to car thieves. The proof? In Denver, 185 “puffers” were stolen between November 1, 2017, and January 31, 2018! The Denver Police Department is asking for residents’ help in applying the brakes to this car theft trend by simply remaining in their car while it’s idling and warming to a good operating temperature. And good habits for preventing car theft year-round are: • Always lock your car, roll up the windows and take your keys. • Never leave belongings in your car. Anything is valuable to a criminal. • Never leave the car running unattended, even for a short period. Criminals are looking for unattended cars to use in committing other crimes. • Park in well-lit and busy areas. • Use an alarm system and/or steering wheel lock device, so your vehicle is less tempting to steal. Besides increasing the risk of thieves stealing a car, “puffing” can also result in a citation, even if the vehicle is equipped with a remote start system. The Denver Municipal Ordinance relevant to “puffing” was enacted to address air quality issues and states: Sec. 4-43. - Idling restriction. (a) No person shall allow a vehicle to idle for more than five (5) minutes in any one-hour period unless: (1) The ambient outside air temperature has been less than twenty (20) degrees Fahrenheit for each hour of the previous twenty-four (24) hour period; or (2) The latest hourly ambient outside air temperature is less than ten (10) degrees Fahrenheit. (b) The idling restriction in subsection (a) shall not apply to emergency vehicles; to vehicles engaged in traffic control operations; to vehicles which are being serviced; to vehicles that must idle to operate auxiliary equipment, including but not limited to pumps, compressors or refrigeration units; or to vehicles en route to a destination that are stopped by traffic congestion. (c) The idling restriction in subsection (a) applies to transportation vehicles, as defined in this subsection, except that the time during which transportation vehicles are actively loading or discharging passengers may not be included in the computation of the five (5) minutes provided for in subsection 4-43(a). A transportation vehicle shall be defined for purposes of this section to mean motor vehicles designed to transport a minimum of sixteen (16) persons. (Ord. No. 330-90, 6-4-90; Ord. No. 683-08, § 15, 12-8-08)

TONIGHT! Affordable Housing Development Meeting on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 6:30PM! The East Colfax Neighborhood Association will hold a Special Community Engagement Meeting on the Redevelopment of 7900 & 8315 East Colfax Avenue as Affordable Housing on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 6:30PM at Counterpath Press located at 7935 E. 14th Ave. at Tamarac. Please join us to give your input on what the redevelopment might look like and encompass before the City of Denver puts out Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) from developers. With the support of the East Colfax Neighborhood Association the City of Denver Purchased both 7900 East Colfax Ave. and 8315 East Colfax Ave. in 2017 for community-serving and affordable housing redevelopment. PT’s II All Nude Strip Club formerly Friday’s, Saturday’s and The Famous Chef Restaurant at 8315 East Colfax at Valentia long regarded as a neighborhood nuisance, was shut down in 2016 and purchased by the City in 2017 for $1.3 million. The property is currently zoned for three stories and is 23,875 ft.² In April of 2017 the city spent $650,000 to buy the vacant lot 7900 East Colfax At Trenton; the past site of the Mrs. C’s and Charlie’s bars, Tops Coffee and Hobo’s Diner. The property is zoned for three stories and is 30,500 ft.². Once the city selects a developer(s) the building at 8315 East Colfax building could be torn down to make way for an affordable-housing project, new retail or nonprofit offices. Both properties could potentially support five-story 60+ unit mixed affordable and market rate housing with ground floor retail and/or community serving space along East Colfax jumpstarting future development along the corridor. The property is one of two eyesores that the city’s real estate office and the Office of Economic Development have negotiated to purchase to help kick-start revitalization in the area. The city used Community Development Block Grant money for the purchases. City officials hope to capitalize on increasing interest in the area because of plans for a bus rapid transit line (BRT) down East Colfax. With support of the neighborhood the City can start a rezoning process that would increase the maximum building height from three to five stories for both properties. Please attend this special community meeting to give your input on all aspects of the redevelopment of both properties within the East Colfax neighborhood. At the below link you can view images of the properties, current zoning maps and potential construction types similar to the Phoenix on the Fax Development at 7171 East Colfax at Pontiac. www.dropbox.com/sh/5pwrzayp822zk5z/AAC6iL9H9fT8XVvmRH_s4zf8a?dl=0 We look forward to hearing input from our neighborhood and community.
