Accomplished artist Sonia Gechtoff has died at age 91. Gechtoff was a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement, working in both the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City. She also was one of the 12 artists (and one of only three living artists) featured in our 2016 exhibition "Women of Abstract Expressionism." "Sonia always believed in herself and knew her work was extraordinary, even during the many years it was under recognized,” exhibition curator Gwen Chanzit said. "Thankfully, in the last few years, she was able to see interest in her work rekindled, as women Abstract Expressionists are now being reexamined. She was thrilled to see her work rediscovered in 'Women of Abstract Expressionism.'" Learn more about the Sonia Gechtoff's life and contributions to the Abstract Expressionist movement:

Sonia Gechtoff, Pioneering But Overlooked Artist of the Bay Area Ab-Ex Movement, Dies at 91 | artnet News

A significant recent acquisition of the DAM, ...

A significant recent acquisition of the DAM, "A Mountain Symphony" by Sven Birger Sandzén is this week's Artwork Of The Week! After moving from Europe to Kansas, Swedish born Sandzén visited Colorado every summer between 1908 and 1952. In this painting, Longs Peak crowns the visual “symphony” of Sandzén's interpretation of Rocky Mountain National Park. The vibrant palette, broad brush strokes and sculptural quality of the paint surface reflect the influence of late 19th- and early 20th-century modernist techniques, many of which Sandzén absorbed while studying in Paris. "A Mountain Symphony," which has not been on public view since 1927, is currently on display on level 2 in the Western American art galleries at the DAM. #Whiskywednesday feat: the Octave Cask 14 yea...

#Whiskywednesday feat: the Octave Cask 14 yeat from the Macduff distillery. In 1958, the Macduff distillery was founded opposite Banff, by a syndicate under the name of Macduff Distillers Ltd, the group included George Crawford, Brodie Hepburn, James Stirret and Morty Dyke. A couple of years later production commenced and, over the course of the 1960s, further stills were installed, bringing the total to four. The Macduff distillery draws its waters from the Gelly Burn and lies on the east bank of the River Deveron in Banffshire. During the 1960s, Scotch whisky exportation increased threefold. In 1972, William Lawson Distillers acquired the distillery and eight years later they, in turn, were acquired by Martini Rossi. During William Lawson’s tenure, they established Macduff as a component of the William Lawson blend, a very popular Scotch whisky which sells in excess of fifteen million bottles yearly. Indeed, Macduff whisky has long since been used as a blending product. Despite this, Macduff is still bottled as a single malt, though sometimes under the name Glen Deveron. Just fewer than half a million bottles of single malt whisky are released from the distillery each year and the majority are exported to France. In 1990, a further still was added, bringing the total to five. Five is a rather unusual number of stills, indeed there is only one other distillery with a combination of two wash and three spirit stills, namely the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye. The Macduff distillery is currently under Bacardi ownership following their acquisition of Martini Rossi in 1992. Bacardi subsequently transferred the distillery to John Dewar and Sons. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt Nose: Malt and shoe polish, marzipan, beeswax and honey. A little pepper and cocoa, hints of aniseed. Palate: Oak and spice, fresh herbs, mint and star anise, toffee apples and butter. Finish: Long and spice-driven #Whiskywednesday #octave14year #macduff #caskstrength #highlands #malt #singlemaltwhisky #denverbrewery
