Neighbors. We missed this article that came out in Chalkbeat in May. We want to post it not only becasue the subject is a timely and relevant one for west Denver communities, but also because one of our neighborhood elementary schools is directly mentioned, Eagleton Elementary. A school were both one of our page administrators and her mother and family attended. This article gets to the heart of a serious matter when talking about gentrifying neighborhoods in Denver, school choice, diversity, and privilege. I have struggled in what to write, not wanting this to devolve into a divisive post, however, it cannot be avoided and should be shared because our entire neighborhood is impacted. We all have different perspectives and choices to make but cannot forget, we are part of making a full community in Villa Park and west Denver.

In Denver's gentrifying neighborhoods, some middle-class parents are avoiding the school down the block
Eagleton Elementary is a block and a half away from where Brian Hilbert lives with his wife and two young children in west Denver. It's a largely Latino working-class neighborhood that is rapidly gentrifying, and Hilbert said he values the diversity of the area.

Congrats to Denver Arts & Venues, the art on Eagleton, Cowell, and Fairview Elementary Schools are phenomenal! "On June 15 at their annual convention in Denver, Americans for the Arts honored 49 outstanding, exemplary and innovative public art works created or debuted in 2017, including three Denver Arts & Venues projects. The RAW Project Denver Aiming to improve learning environments and communities around Denver's low-income neighborhoods, in Sept. 2017 the Re-Imagining Arts Worldwide (RAW) Project engaged more than 30 artists to paint exterior walls of Villa Park and Sun Valley elementary schools -- Eagleton, Cowell and Fairview -- branching out for the first time from Miami's Wynwood urban arts district where the project began. Denver Arts & Venues and Denver Public Schools supported The RAW Project Denver to broaden and strengthen outlets for learning through creativity. Community members, teachers and students also participated, and artists took to the classrooms to talk about the creative process. The RAW Denver Project raised funding through a Denver Urban Arts Fund Grant, and corporate and private contributions. The RAW Denver collaboration is one of a new series of Urban Arts Fund partnerships focusing on community building and social change, addressing diversity, equity and inclusiveness values. Read more about the Urban Arts Fund and The RAW Denver Project."
